Ncuti Gatwa is the “Fifteenth Doctor”

After the shock regeneration of Jodie Whittaker into David Tennant at the end of The Power of the Doctor, Doctor Who fans were left wondering what was going on when a short teaser of the 2023 specials followed, asking more questions than it provided answers.

To add to the mix, most people thought that David Tennant was appearing as some form of the Tenth incarnation of the Doctor, which he played on TV between 2005 and 2010 – but it appears he may be the Fourteenth Doctor rather than just the Tenth 2.0.

In a suitably mischievous message to fans, incoming showrunner Russell T Davies, who takes charge of the show again now that Chris Chibnall has left the helm, has promised a lot more twists and turns before the show returns next year. He also refers to Ncuti Gatwa as the “Fifteenth Doctor” rather than the Fourteenth as many had been expecting.

“If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we’ve got plenty more surprises on the way!” he said. “The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger, and fun!”

Added Davies: “And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!”

It is thought that Ncuti Gatwa will make his first full appearance as the Doctor around the festive period of 2023. It’s not clear if that means there will be a Doctor Who Christmas Day special or perhaps a New Year’s Day show as there has also been in the past.

Fans will have to wait around a year until the 60th anniversary specials in November 2023.

There are lots of surprises to come… so hold on!
