Adrian Lester responds to Doctor Who “perfect Doctor” calls

Adrian Lester has for many years been connected to the role of the Doctor in the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, with many fans keen to see him take on the lead role in the show one day.

And now the Hustle, Riviera (pictured above) and Trigger Point star has responded to a fan online who has suggested he would make a great Doctor in the series.

“Heh heh. Why thank you,” wrote Lester on Twitter under a message from a fan who said he would be “perfect as the Doctor” and accompanied the tweet with two phots of Lester.

Added Lester in his response:: “But the young person Who, is about to fill the Doctor’s shoes is a huge talent and will be excellent.”

The young person to whom Lester refers is of course 30-year-old Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa who was announced as the new Doctor in May 2022 and is due to take over full time as the Fifteenth Doctor in a festive special in 2023. Gatwa will then begin his full time role as the Doctor opposite his new companion Ruby Sunday, played by the former Coronation Street star Millie Gibson for season 14 of Doctor Who in 2024.

Before Gatwa takes to the TARDIS as part of Russell T Davies’ bold new reboot of a reboot for the series in his second time in charge of the show, there will be three one-hour 60th anniversary specials of Doctor Who in November 2023. The shows will star David Tennant, who previously featured as the Tenth Doctor between 2005 and 2009 as the Fourteenth incarnation of the Time Lord. He will be joined by Catherine Tate as Donna Noble and a variety of other characters including Rose played by Yasmin Finney and Neil Patrick Harris as an unnamed enemy tot he Doctor.

The 60th-anniversary shows will be the first as part of a new deal between the BBC and Disney to make Disney+ the home of streaming across the globe for Doctor Who.
