Anita Dobson reveals Doctor Who character name and relationship to Ruby Sunday
Former EastEnders star Anita Dobson has revealed details about her character in season 14 of Doctor Who.
Dobson, 73, has enjoyed a long acting career and is best known to most TV fans as Angie Watts in the BBC soap EastEnders, a role she played from the soap’s first episode in 1985 until she left in 1988.
She was announced to be joining Doctor Who on 20th January 2023 alongside Michelle Greenidge. Although photographs of both actors in character were released at the time, no further details on their characters were revealed.
However, while attending the ICON Awards in Support of Prostate Cancer, Dobson spoke to the Daily Mail, and revealed further details.
“Well Mrs Flood is the character I play and she’s… Milly, Ruby Sunday, the doctor’s assistant, she’s her neighbour.” said Dobson when asked about her upcoming role.
Added Dobson: “She lives in the same street so she’s always got her eyes on what’s going on. She’s one of those.”
The actor also spoke about the fact that she’d only shot on the series for a few days and hadn’t yet had the chance to appear on screen with incoming Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa.
“I haven’t worked with Ncuti yet.” She continued.
“I’ve done the read through with him and he’s gorgeous, he’s absolutely adorable and very talented.”
Dobson also had a lot of praise for new companion on the show, former Coronation Street star Millie Gibson, who will play Ruby Sunday in season 14 of Doctor Who.
“Milly, I adore. I think she’s absolutely stunning. But I’ve only done about three days so very early days.”
And it turns out Anita didn’t need to be asked twice to be on the show.
Speaking of her interaction with showrunner Russell T Davies before signing on, she explained: “He asked me to join the ranks and he said, ‘Please come and play with us.’ How can you resist that?”
Before Doctor Who season 14 kicks off at Christmas time 2023 with a seasonal special, there is the small matter of the 60th-anniversary celebrations to get through.
Whovians will be treated to three one-hour specials in November starring the return of David Tennant to the show, this time playing the Fourteenth Doctor. The specials are expected to have various surprise guest stars, however we already know that Catherine Tate will return as Donna Noble, Yasmin Finney will play Rose and Neil Patrick Harris will feature heavily in the stories.
