He was born in Paisley, Scotland, the son of Margaret and Edward Butler, a bookmaker. His family is Catholic and of Irish descent. As a child, he lived in Montreal, Canada, with his mother and younger brother, Peter.
After studying law at the University of Glasgow, Butler briefly worked as a lawyer in Scotland. He then moved to London to pursue his acting career.
Some of Butler’s early roles were in the films “Dracula 2000” (2000) and “Reign of Fire” (2002). He rose to prominence with his role in the action film “300” (2007), which was based on the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller.
