Billie Piper “flirting with the idea” of a Doctor Who return
Billie Piper is the original companion of the modern Doctor Who era, having travelled with both Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor and David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor in her time playing Rose Tyler after the show was rebooted in 2005.
Piper left the BBC science fiction series full-time in 2006, although returned in season 4 and for a 2010 special – as well as making an appearance in the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor. One of the most popular companions in the show, ever since her departure, fans have been keen to know if she’ll make a return to the series someday – and with the 60th anniversary coming up in November 2023, and three special episodes written by showrunner Russell T Davies already getting fans excited, could this be the year we see the return of Rose?
Well, Piper has certainly hinted at the idea that she would be keen to explore the idea of a return to the show, if even for a “a couple of days on set” when asked about Doctor Who while promoting her excellent show I Hate Suzie Too.
When asked if she was envious of all that was going on in the world of Doctor Who right now, she told On Demand Entertainment: “maybe not envy, like excitement for the fans… because Russell [T Davies] is the master of that show [Doctor Who] and he does something so unique with it, I think it’s one of its, if it not its biggest draw. So it’s very exciting when I think about the fans receiving that.”
And then she added a line that will certainly excite fans who are keen to see a return of Rose Tyler to the series: “And also sort of flirting with the idea of, you know, a day or two on set… in the future. But who knows, who knows?”
Doctor Who returns in November 2023 with three special episodes starring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. He will be joined by one returning companion in the form of Donna Noble played by Catherine Tate – as well as the introduction of a new character called Rose played by Yasmin Finney. Could this be an opportunity for there to be two Roses on the show while the mess the Master left at the end of The Power of the Doctor is cleared up?
After the 60th shows, there will be a seasonal special starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson as his new companion Ruby Sunday. This will be followed by season 14 of Doctor Who in 2024.
