The bonus content, which follows the release of the full series on August 5th 2022, consists of two episodes stitched together, one animated and one live-action. The Animated part is called A Dream of a Thousand Cats, and the live-action episode, Calliope. Both of the parts are based on original parts of Neil Gaiman’s comic book world.
The animated episode, A Dream of a Thousand Cats, has a particularly impressive voice cast led by David Tennant and featuring Sandra Oh, James McAvoy, Georgia Tennant, Michael Sheen, Nonso Anozie ad even Neil Gaiman himself. It also features the voice acting talent of two comedians Joe Lycett and Diane Morgan.
The live-action Calliope episode stars Melissanthi Mahut, opposite another Doctor Who alumnus Arthur Darvill, Nina Wadia and the legendary British actor Derek Jacobi.
“We endeavoured to make the animated version of ‘A Dream of a Thousand Cats’ as mesmerizing and hypnotic as we could by utilising the magic of real oil paintings on canvas,” said Hisko Hulsing, who directed the animated part of the show.
He added: “We combined the paintings with classically drawn 2D animation, based on realistic 3D animation of telepathic cats in order to create a trippy world that feels both grounded and dreamy at the same time. Untold Studios in London created the breathtaking 3D animation of the cats. The wonderful 2D animation, oil paintings and stylising were all done at Submarine Studio’s in Amsterdam.”
The Sandman debuted on Netflix on August 5th and features yet another former Doctor Who star, Jenna Coleman. It has been a tremendous hit for the streamer, consistently in the UK Top 10 for shows over the last few weeks. Whether there is to be more of the live-action series, at this time, we don’t know. We can only dream on…
