David Tennant on a return to Doctor Who: “It would be quite a weird idea”

Ever since Jodie Whittaker announced that she will be leaving the title role in Doctor Who, speculation has been rife as to who will replace her as the Doctor.

With Chris Chibnall also leaving the show as showrunner in 2022 to be replaced by Russell T Davies, the man who rebooted the series in 2005 after a 16 year hiatus, some believe that Davies may consider casting an actor from the past for his most important appointment. And with David Tennant at the very top of the tree when it comes to popular Doctors, having starred in many of the best Doctor Who episodes of all time, it’s no wonder that rumours persist that Tennant could make a sensational return to the show.

This speculation has been fuelled by internet and tabloid rumours in the past month, as well as the bookmakers who have had David Tennant as their favourite in the betting in recent weeks, before most have removed all odds in this market altogether.

What’s going on? Or is nothing going on?

Is David Tennant about to make a return to Doctor Who?

Well, the man himself was asked this very question this weekend while attending a Comic Con panel in Germany, when the host suggested he would return with Russell T Davies to the sci-fi series. Tennant, with his trademark wit acknowledged the speed at which internet rumours can spread and be spun, and concluded that it didn’t really matter what he said on the issue, but it was a strange idea.

“I’ve been asked a version of this question for the last 20 years, and I’ve learned through bitter experience there’s not any point in answering it,” Tennant said from the stage.

“Because, whatever I say is spun by whoever wants to hear it. So there’s no point in me confirming it, there’s no point in me denying it, there’s no point in me fudging it – whatever I say will become whatever the internet wants it to be.”

Tennant continued, addressing the concept of his return to the series, saying “I mean it’s a pretty… it would be quite a weird idea. And, it’s not something that you would necessarily expect from Doctor Who.”

So, inconclusive!

With only one more episode of the Whittaker/ Chibnall era to come, which is chalked in for some time around the BBC’s centenary celebrations in the autumn, it feels like we’ll be due an announcement on the next Doctor sooner rather than later.

But exactly when, and who will be taking on the famous role is something that for now remains shrouded in secrecy.

But the guessing games are the best part, right. So, long may it continue…
