Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa reveals where he wants to take his TARDIS

With all the excitement of The Power of the Doctor, the regeneration of Jodie Whittaker to returning star David Tennant, the classic Doctors joining the BBC 100th birthday celebrations, the companions reprising their roles – and now the news that Disney+ is to become the international home of Doctor Who, you could almost be forgiven for forgetting there’s a brand new Doctor joining the BBC science fiction show in 2023.

Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa was revealed to the world in the summer as the next full-time Doctor and we now know he will be appearing in his first full episode around the festive period of 2023, with a full season of Doctor Who expected in 2024.

Before that we know there are three 60th anniversary specials planned in November 2023 which will feature David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and the return of Catherine Tate as Donna Noble. Although we have seen a tiny glimpse of Ncuti Gatwa in character as the Fifteenth Doctor in a teaser trail for 2023, it is not clear what involvement he will have in the special episodes. But as you might expect in Doctor Who world, there are plenty of theories about what’s going on.

But what does Ncuti Gatwa want to do when he finally takes over the controls of the TARDIS? Where would he take the iconic police box if he could go anywhere?

“I would take my TARDIS to Africa, I would take my TARDIS to Nigeria” Ncuti explained in a video made to promote the announcement that Disney+ will be streaming Doctor Who from 2023.

He added: “I would love for the Doctor to meet the Orisha, which were a set of gods in Nigerian mythology – and I think he’d have a lovely old time.”

Russell T Davies has now taken over as showrunner of Doctor Who as Chris Chibnall’s final episode was The Power of the Doctor. It is understood the filming of Gatwa’s first full season of Doctor Who is to begin in November of this year, so we can probably expect more teases and surprises along the way from the BBC.

Adding to the anticipation, Gatwa said: “there is so much to come in the next season. The TARDIS can go anywhere and will go anywhere. Nothing is too big or too small.”

Excited yet?
