Sarah Michelle Gellar on a Buffy return: ‘It Doesn’t Need to Be Done’

Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains one of the most popular supernatural drama series of the modern age, and ever since it ended in 2003 fans have asked whether or not there could be a return of the show.

However, now, nearly 20 years on from the final episode of the show airing, the star of the TV show Sarah Michell Gellar who played Buffy Summers, a young “slayer” chosen by fate to battle evil forces, has given her verdict on the idea of a return to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Speaking of the potential of her involvement in a reboot or new chapter of Buffy in the future, Gellar told SFX Magazine (via MovieWeb): “I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done.”

Adding: “We wrapped that up.”

Gellar however did say that she’d be happy for the Buffy story to continue without her involvement.

“I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power.”

Added Gellar: “But like I said, the metaphors of ‘Buffy’ were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally ran between 1997 and 2003 and spawned a spin-off series Angel.

There have been several reports around potential reboots for the series in the last decade, but none of them have come to fruition.

Sarah Michelle Gellar returns to supernatural television in 2023 with the series Wolfpack which follows the story of a pair of teenagers whose life is changed after a Californian wildfire awakens a terrible creature. Gellar plays an arson investigator named Kristin Ramsey in the series which will be on streaming service Paramount+ from January 26th 2023.
