Millie Gibson hints at Ruby Sunday character: “I’d say the haircut is important”

Whovians have some time to wait until Millie Gibson, the 18-year-old former Coronation Street star, makes her screen debut as the Fifteenth Doctor’s companion Ruby Sunday. Although Doctor Who season 14 is filming right now, the first full episode starring Ncuti Gatwa and Millie is not slated to hit the airwaves (and the streaming waves of Disney+ outside of the UK) until the festive season of 2023.

And although we have now seen pictures of the Fifteenth and Ruby Sunday in costume and heard from Millie on her journey to becoming the character – we still don’t know much about the character of Ruby Sunday herself.

However, Millie Gibson has offered a few tiny clues as to what we can expect from the Doctor’s companion who is just two days of the week from sharing her name with a Rolling Stones song (Ruby Tuesday).

“I’d say the hair cut is important,” teases Millie in an interview with Doctor Who magazine.

She adds: “I think Ruby’s a bit punky, a bit spiky. Jane [Tranter], the executive producer, really described it well to me – she said: ‘Ruby’s one of those girls that will go to a charity shop and pick the best item off the rack.’”

Shortly after Gibson was announced as the new companion in the BBC’s science fiction show as part of a live Children in Need telethon, many of the newspapers ran photographs of Millie with a new shorter haircut.

Gibson posted a picture on her Instagram account with her new hair accompanied by the message “rock the chop.”

Doctor Who will return to television in November 2023 with three 60th anniversary specials starring the return of David Tennant, this time playing the Fourteenth incarnation of the Time Lord. He will be accompanied by the returning of Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, and the episodes will also feature Yasmin Finney as Rose and Neil Patrick Harris as an unnamed enemy causing problems for the Doctor and his pals.

A Christmas Day trailer for Doctor Who 2023 also revealed Beep the Meep as an enemy who has previously appeared in comic strips of Doctor Who.

Season 14 of Doctor Who starring Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson will follow from the festive season of 2023.
