Karen Gillan on a Doctor Who return rumours: “Maybe, maybe not – I don’t know!”

There is a lot of speculation right now that everyone who has ever been in Doctor Who might be making their way onto screen in the 60th anniversary specials of the show that will air in November 2023.

We know that the three shows, written by returning showrunner Russell T Davies, and the first of a new deal between the BBC and Disney to make Disney+ the streaming home of Doctor Who will feature returning stars – but we’re not sure if there will still be surprises.

It has already been announced that David TennantCatherine Tate, Jacqueline King, Karl Collins and the late Bernard Cribbins will be reprising roles in the show, there has been much speculation that other major characters from the modern era of the show may make returns in the three episode story this November.

Gillan, who played Amy Pond opposite Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, is a fan favourite and has in the past never ruled out a return to the show.

However, when asked in an interview to promote Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 about the recent rumours that she could be returning for the specials, she was non-committal in her answer.

“I mean, yeah, it’s always nice when people appreciate anything that you’ve done,” she told Radio Times.

Added Gillan: “But no, it’s cool to see that people are still intrigued by Amy Pond and whether she could return.”

Concluding:  “Maybe, maybe not – I don’t know!”

Well, that’s cleared that up!

When asked previously about one day returning to the show, Gillan said “Never say never.”

“If I was asked, I would be really interested and keen… it would be really amazing”

She added that if she were to do it, she’d like it to be a part of a mini-reunion with other cast members.

“I would like to do it with Matt Smith and Arthur Darvill if I was going to go back.”

The 60th episodes will be followed by the first full episode starring incoming Fifteenth Doctor actor Ncuti Gatwabest known to many for his role as Eric Effiong in Sex Education in Netflix. His first show is slated for the festive season and will see the introduction of his new companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson formerly of Coronation Street.
