Sam Heughan: “We love you Outlander fans” as final season announced

Outlander stars including Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe have said thank you to fans for their support of the TV show in a special video announcing that season eight of the time-travelling period adventure will be the last.

A global phenomenon, Outlander is based on a novel series by Diana Gabaldon and tells the story of a former World War Two military nurse who sees herself transported back in time from 1945 to 1783 Highlands Scotland.

Starring Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall and Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser, the show which was developed for television by Ronal D. Moore, began broadcasting on Starz in 2004. Quickly building a fanbase all over the world, Outlander has become one of the most successful shows in its genre in the last decade and has made international stars of its lead actors.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” Sam Heughan says in the announcement video that the show has been renewed for a final season (video below.)

“Thank you so much for being with us from day one.” adds Caitriona Balfe.

“We love you Outlander fans,” says Heughan in the video which reminds fans that every good story has to end, but the show is going to “go out with a bang and tell the story the way it should be.”

Various members of the cast thank fans for their incredible support for the show and talk about what a great experience making the show has been. This is interspersed with footage of the loyal Outlander fans at events and screenings chanting for their favourite show and stars during “Droughtlanders” (a period of time when the show is not on the air and there is a drought of Outlander!).

“We can’t wait to bring the last season to you guys,” says Sam Heughan sitting on set next to his co-star Balfe.

Balfe adds: “And we hope that we do you proud and we are very, very grateful – so thank you.”

But fans who can’t get enough of the Outlander world will be pleased to know that although the main series is coming to an end, a prequel focussing on Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, called Blood of My Blood is on the way soon.

Said Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at Starz said: “For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion. But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story. We’re thrilled to continue to partner with Matthew, Maril, and Ronald and can’t wait to see where their alluring storytelling takes us next.”
