Peter Capaldi on greeting trick or treaters as the Doctor
It’s Halloween, a time when people like to get dressed up as their favourite characters from TV, movies and books and well, eat a lot of sweets and have a good time.
And at the heart of the Halloween experience for many young people is going out knocking on doors, trick or treating, and collecting delicious sweets and treats along the way. But imagine if you were dressed as your favourite baddie from Doctor Who like a Cyberman and you knocked on a door and the person to open it was the Doctor himself from Doctor Who… that would be quite surprise!
Well, the Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, has shared his amusement of opening the door on Halloween when he was playing the character between 2013 and 2017, telling the Edit from BBC Scotland on Twitter about amusing Halloweens past in the Capaldi household.
“When I was Doctor Who it used to be funny because kids would come to the door and Doctor Who would be there to give them their sweeties and their stuff, so that was quite fun.”
The interviewer asks: “So they thought that Doctor Who was answering the door to them at Halloween?”
And clearly laughing and joking, Peter Capaldi says: “I suppose I should have taken the costume off!”
Well, whatever you’re doing this Halloween, it’s unlikely you’re going to do much better than knocking on the door and the Doctor answering! Those were some lucky kids.
Peter Capaldi has most recently been starring in The Devil’s Hour opposite Jessica Raine on Prime Video in a show that is executive produced by ex-Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat. Although Capaldi is a self-confessed Whovian and clearly has a lot of love for the show, he has recently ruled himself out of a return to the show for the 60th anniversary as part of a multi-Doctor episode.
“It’s very hard to imagine how you’d get a decent crack of the whip when there’s 14 of you, you know? So I think I’d rather leave it as is, because I loved my time on Doctor Who and loved doing it.”
