Fifa 23 adds Ted Lasso, Roy Kent and AFC Richmond as playable characters

Ted Lasso, Roy Kent and the entire AFC Richmond team are arriving on Fifa 23 as playable characters, it has been confirmed.

Although it had been rumoured for some time that the hit Apple TV+ team, its manager and its star players could be making an appearance in this year’s edition of the football game, the new trailer (below) has not only confirmed their appearance, but also gives us a first glimpse of how AFC Richmond look when they’ve been digitally rendered as your football playthings.

EA Sports have teamed up with Warner Bros. who make Ted Lasso for Apple TV+ to licence the popular fictional team for what will be their last edition of the game as we know it, as their licensing deal with the football governing body Fifa is coming to an end.

TV fans might be tempted to get the game for the first time, even if they’re not usually gamers as this will be a unique chance to play as Roy Kent, Jamie Tartt, Sam Obisanya, and Dani Rojas to name but a few, as well of course as see what its like to sit in the famously optimistic dugout run by Ted Lasso himself.

Fans will also be treated to a digital rendering of Nelson Road, the home of AFC Richmond, which will be a fairly easy thing for the designers to recreate as they use Crystal palace’s ground Selhurst Park in the TV show, so only a few tweaks will be needed, you’d guess.

Speaking about the game’s inclusion of the fictional team, Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis said: “I am truly fortunate, and deeply grateful, to have had many special moments in my career thus far, and I consider this experience among the best of them.

Ted Lasso in Fifa 23

“As long-time fans of EA SPORTS FIFA, having Ted Lasso and the whole AFC Richmond squad incorporated into the newest version of the game is truly a dream come true for myself and the rest of the fellas. Our cast and crew work tremendously hard on this show, and we are flattered that it resonates with so many folks. We look forward to our fans having the opportunity to play with, play as, and even play against their favourite AFC Richmond characters.”

Ted Lasso launched on Apple TV+ in August 2020, and is based on an NBC Sports character that Sudekis played in their coverage of the Premier League. The comedy show quickly won over armies of fans in the UK and across the globe for its upbeat and feel-good style of comedy, as well as characters that people really cared about. Two seasons have already aired on Apple TV+ with a third having been commissioned by the streaming provider.

One of Apple TV+’s most popular original shows, Ted Lasso has won a number of awards in the last few years including Primetime Emmys and Golden Globes.

FIFA 23 is out on September 30th and will be available on Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Stadia, PS4, and Xbox One.
