If you haven’t seen Welcome to Wrexham, the FX / Disney+ series that follows actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they take over ownership of Welsh football club Wrexham – well, you should go and watch it immediately because it’s one of the documentary highlights of the year. But now we’ve established your viewing schedule, it turns out that I’m not the only one who wants to celebrate the impact the show has had.

Yes indeed, the duo, who have entertained TV viewers in the past few months with their mission to get National League football team Wrexham into the Football League, and while doing it bring regeneration to the North Wales town of Wrexham are to be honoured for the part they’ve played in promoting Wales and the Welsh people on the global stage.

The pair will be awarded the Diolch y Ddraig (Dragon Award) on November 14th at the Wales to the World concert taking place in New York City which is designed to showcase Welsh talent to the globe, reports THR. The event will take place the night before the opening World Cup game for Wales against the United States.

The award is being given to Reynolds and McElhennry by the Welsh government, the Welsh broadcaster S4C, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and Urdd, a Welsh cultural organisation.

“The FAW are absolutely delighted to see Rob and Ryan recognised for their role in these special times for football in Cymru (Wales) and for Cymru’s growing place on the world stage,” said Noel Mooney, CEO of the Football Association of Wales.

He added: “We live in exciting times with passionate organisations and people working together to build momentum behind the promotion of our culture, history and language.”

Welcome to Wrexham streamed its first season this year on Disney+ in the UK and has received critical acclaim. It is understood a second season of the show, which will follow the fortunes of the world’s third oldest professional football team, the people who run it and the fans who live in the community, will air to tell the story of the latest football season.
