Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney joins Doctor Who

Yasmin Finney, best known to TV fans as Elle Argent in Netflix series Heartstopper, will join Doctor Who as character Rose, it has been revealed by the BBC.

One of the stars of the breakout coming of age romance series that has taken the world by storm since its release on the 22nd April 2022, Finney has quickly become a well-known face and name to streamers across the globe, winning rave reviews from critics and fans for her performance.

The news comes not much more than a week since the announcement of another Netflix star, Ncuti Gatwa, of Sex Education fame will be joining the series in the lead role as the Doctor, and just yesterday that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be returning to the series in 2023 to reprise their popular characters for the 60th anniversary special.

Speaking of joining Doctor Who Yasmin said: “If anyone would have told 8 year old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them. This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life. I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get Ready.”

Russell T Davies, showrunner of Doctor Who added: “Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another Rose? You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set. We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world – and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”

Although Russell T Davies has now taken the helm of the show, there is still one more episode of Chris Chibnall’s era in charge of the show left to air, a 90-minute special in October that will coincide with the centenary celebrations of the BBC. The episode will be the last to star Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, and although there are likely to be more surprises, we already know that several old companions will be returning for the episode as well as some of the Doctor’s deadliest foes.
