Yasmin Finney to “keep you all guessing” on Doctor Who role
It seems like a long time since it was announced that Yasmin Finney would be joining the Doctor Who cast for the 60th anniversary specials.
Back in May 2022, the actress best known to TV fans as Elle Argent in Netflix series Heartstopper, was revealed to be playing a character called Rose which of course had fans begin guessing how -if at all- this new character could be connected to Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper in the series.
At the time Finney said: “I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get Ready”
Russell T Davies, showrunner of Doctor Who also said: “Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another Rose? You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set. We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world – and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”
But since then, we’ve still not really learned much more about Yasmin’s character – and it feels like we may have to keep waiting…
Asked about her upcoming role in Doctor Who in a new interview, Finney told Elle: “I’m honoured to be a part of that universe, to be a part of that world. I grew up watching Doctor Who and being obsessed with Russell T Davies’ writing.”
However, when it came to her character’s part in the 60th specials, which will star David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and see the return of Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, Finney says she will have to “keep you all guessing”
She added: “What I can tell you is it’s about time, you know? It will definitely reach the audience it needs to reach and it’s going to be so needed.”
The 60th specials, which are written by Russell T Davies and will be the first shows as part of a new deal between the BBC and Disney to make Disney+ the streaming home of Doctor Who outside the UK, will air in November 2023 and be followed by season 14 of Doctor Who. The new regular season will star Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and former Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson as his companion Ruby Sunday.
With many months of speculation to come over who may or may not make a guest appearance in the 60th specials and the 14th season – expect 2023 to be a busy time for Doctor Who fans across the globe.
